People taking oral glucagon like peptide 1 medications, including Wegovy tablets, are being advised to keep coffee and tea away from the medication. Doctors warn that these and other beverages can interfere with how the pill is absorbed.

FDA prescribing information states that Wegovy tablets should be taken on an empty stomach with no more than 4 ounces of water. No other liquids should be consumed with the medication.

After taking the tablet, patients should wait at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking other beverages or taking other oral medications. That means a morning cup of coffee or tea should wait until the required period has passed.

Wegovy is the first FDA approved oral medication for chronic weight management. Its instructions differ from those for the original injectable options because food and drink can affect absorption through the digestive system.

Here's What They're Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Dr. Michael Hall, a board certified physician, longevity specialist and author of "Infinite Youth," confirmed that oral Wegovy should be taken on an empty stomach. He said plain water should be the only liquid used with the pill.

"Coffee, tea, juice or other drinks should not be taken with the pill because they can interfere with how the medicine is absorbed," Hall told Fox News Digital.

Hall, who is based in Miami Beach, Florida, also outlined a morning routine for people using oral GLP 1 medications. The Wegovy tablet should be swallowed whole with up to 4 ounces of plain water.

According to the FDA label, the tablets should not be split, crushed, chewed or dissolved. Patients should then avoid food, beverages other than water and other oral medicines for at least 30 minutes.

"Food and beverages other than water, and other oral medicines, can affect absorption if taken too soon," Hall said. He emphasized that timing is central to following the medication instructions.

"The safest rule is 30 minutes of nothing by mouth except water after the tablet."

Once the waiting period is over, patients can eat breakfast, drink coffee or tea and take other oral medications. Hall also noted that GLP 1 medications can slow stomach emptying, which can affect how other oral medicines are absorbed.

Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel agreed that a GLP 1 pill should not be taken with caffeine. He said the medication should be taken only on an empty stomach with water.

Drinking tea later in the day generally does not interfere with oral GLP 1 medications or block their absorption, Siegel told Fox News Digital. However, he said patients should consult their physicians.

Siegel also said certain teas may offer support for specific digestive concerns. He identified green, black and white teas as options that can help support digestion.

Ginger and peppermint tea can help alleviate nausea, according to Siegel. His comments addressed tea consumed during the day rather than tea taken at the same time as the Wegovy tablet.

CMS administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz has discussed the role of GLP 1 medications in combating obesity. He said the medications can support better health when they are combined with lifestyle changes and medical guidance.
