WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • October’s hunter’s moon will become visible around sunset and reach peak illumination at 12:12 a.m. ET on Monday, October 26.
  • Saturn will appear gold and sit a few degrees south of the moon, although bright moonlight could make the planet difficult to spot.
  • The moon may look orange near the horizon because its light passes through a denser layer of air.
  • From Monday through Wednesday, the moon will approach, eclipse and pass the Pleiades star cluster.

October’s full moon will brighten the sky this weekend, offering viewers a vivid seasonal spectacle and a possible glimpse of Saturn. The ringed planet will appear gold and sit only a few degrees south of the moon as darkness settles Sunday.

The full moon arrives about a month after the fall equinox. It will rise particularly early, becoming visible around sunset before reaching peak illumination at 12:12 a.m. ET on Monday, October 26, according to EarthSky.

As the moon hangs low over the horizon, it may take on a striking orange appearance. Moonlight passing through a denser layer of air loses shorter blue and violet wavelengths, allowing orange and red wavelengths to become more prominent, much like the colors of a sunset.

The seasonal spectacle is known as the hunter’s moon. Native Americans traditionally used its bright light to hunt active wildlife and prepare food for winter after September’s harvest moon, when farmers would typically gather their crops.

The moon’s traditional names reflect its importance during this point in the seasonal cycle. Noah Petro is chief of NASA’s Planetary Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Lab at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

“These names were assigned to the moon because the moon has a meaning,” Petro said. “I’d encourage folks, while they’re looking at the moon, to ask, ‘What does this time of year mean to me?’ Everyone should have a personal connection.”

Other names for the hunter’s moon also emerged from seasonal traditions. Indigenous tribes used names including the drying rice moon, the falling leaves moon and the migrating moon, while some groups called it the blood moon because of its orange red coloring.

The moon will return to its familiar silvery appearance over the coming months. Still, careful observers may notice its face shifting as it rotates, revealing variations linked to the composition and age of the lunar surface.

Petro, who is also a project scientist for the Artemis III mission, said his team plans to examine those variations during the Artemis mission slated for June 2027. The moon’s different gradations can offer clues about events that affected its surface.

“When you see color differences on the moon, that’s telling you that something has already happened there — either the rocks are made of something different, or it’s a younger or older surface,” Petro said. “It tells you about the geological history.”

For the clearest view, Petro recommended finding a location without trees or buildings blocking the horizon, such as a large field. Cold winter nights can also improve visibility because heat creates atmospheric turbulence that makes the sky appear hazy.

“The beauty of the moon is that you don’t need to have the most impressive telescope,” Petro said. “You need two things: clear eyes and clear skies. And with that, you can fall in love with the moon.”

Cloudy conditions Sunday night do not necessarily end the opportunity. The moon will also appear full on Saturday and Monday, giving viewers additional chances to see it around its brightest phase.

The hunter’s moon concludes a several day stretch in which the moon approaches and passes Saturn. Although the planet will appear nearby in the sky, the moon’s intense brightness could make Saturn difficult to spot.

More celestial activity will follow from Monday through Wednesday, when the moon will approach, eclipse and pass the Pleiades star cluster, also called the Seven Sisters. To the unaided eye, the famous cluster appears as a fuzzy gathering of six to seven stars.

The hunter’s moon is the 11th of 13 full moons in 2026. The final two will both be supermoons, appearing brighter and larger because the moon will be closest to Earth in its orbit.
