A respected drug treatment and mental health center in the Netherlands has issued an urgent warning about ecstasy pills shaped like President Donald Trump’s head. The Trimbos Institute said the pills contain a high concentration of PMMA, an ingredient that could prove fatal.

The institute issued what it called a "red alert" over the tablets. PMMA is similar to MDMA, the active ingredient in ecstasy, but it acts more slowly and could create a dangerous delay for users expecting a quicker effect.

Because the ingredient has a slow onset, someone taking a pill may decide to consume more. The Trimbos Institute warned that taking additional pills in that situation could potentially result in an overdose.

"Absolutely do not use these pills," the institute said.

The warning followed the recent submission of the pills to some of the institute’s centers. Those locations test drugs before people take them, giving the organization an opportunity to examine what the tablets contained.

A photograph shared by the institute showed two of the distinctive pills. One was green on the front and the other was yellow, while the backs of the tablets were red and blue.

Both pills featured a likeness of Trump’s face on the front. The name "Trump" and the letters "NL" were stamped on the other side, making their politically themed design immediately recognizable.

Despite the institute’s warning about the possibility of overdose, no overdoses or deaths connected to the pills had been reported. Spokesperson Anniek Groothuis confirmed that point in comments to The Associated Press.

"We do not know of any victims where PMMA was found in their blood," she said.

The lack of reported victims did not soften the institute’s warning. Its concern centered on the delayed action of PMMA and the risk that users might take more while waiting to feel the effects of the first pill.

Ecstasy remains illegal in the Netherlands. However, hundreds of thousands of people use the drug every year, according to the government, placing the warning within a country where illicit ecstasy use continues despite its legal status.

The newly examined pills are not the first ecstasy tablets made in the shape of Trump’s head. Authorities in both the United States and Germany have previously seized batches carrying similar imagery.

In 2018, Indiana State Police confiscated orange Trump shaped ecstasy pills during an operation aimed at small time drug traffickers. Those tablets also displayed Trump’s face on the front.

The Indiana pills carried the words "great again" on the back. The wording appeared to reference Trump’s Make America Great Again slogan, adding another political detail to the tablets’ design.

German police encountered a similar batch one year earlier. In 2017, officers seized thousands of Trump shaped ecstasy pills that also appeared to be orange and had an estimated street value of nearly $46,000.

The latest warning differs in its focus on what the pills contain rather than their appearance alone. The Trimbos Institute specifically identified a high concentration of PMMA and urged people not to consume the tablets.

The institute’s photograph showed how the newer pills combine multiple colors with Trump’s image and identifying text. However, the organization’s alert emphasized that the central concern was the slow acting ingredient and its potential to contribute to an overdose.

For now, officials have not identified any victims with PMMA detected in their blood, according to Groothuis. At the same time, the institute is maintaining its direct warning as the tablets appear at centers that examine drugs before use.
