A Florida woman is behind bars and facing an attempted murder charge after authorities accused her of drugging a 69 year old man she met through online dating. Samantha Adams, 39, was arrested after the man was hospitalized following an Aug. 17 meeting at his home.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Adams and the victim had been in a relationship involving paid sex for two to three months after meeting online. Adams allegedly told the man that her name was “Nala.”

Judd said Polk County deputies are calling Adams a “black widow.” He described the allegations in a video posted to social media, saying, “She tried to kill him. She tried to overdose him. She tried to extort him.”

Court records show Adams and the victim argued on Aug. 17 about a vehicle he had purchased for her. When the man said he wanted the vehicle back because he could not afford it, Adams allegedly said they could discuss the issue at his home.

Once they were at the residence, Adams gave the man a shot glass containing “suspected whiskey,” according to court records. Judd said, “She slipped him benzodiazepine.”

After the man drank the beverage, he and Adams engaged in physical affection, records show. When he attempted to touch her sexually, Adams allegedly demanded $1,000, then got dressed and left after he said he did not have the money.

Not long afterward, the victim was asked to pick up his granddaughter from a Wawa gas station near a movie theater. He had dropped her off at the theater with her boyfriend earlier that day.

The man began feeling ill while traveling to the Wawa, court records show. He later recalled only that his granddaughter pulled him from the driver’s seat and moved him to the back seat, according to Adams’ arrest warrant.

The granddaughter drove her unconscious grandfather home. When he remained unconscious later that evening, she called 911, and he was taken to a hospital.

Records show the man received Narcan at the hospital because an opioid overdose was initially suspected. However, a urine analysis and other testing showed benzodiazepine poisoning, metabolic encephalopathy, dehydration and acute kidney injury, investigators reported.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration describes benzodiazepines as depressants that cause sedation and hypnosis. An overdose can cause extreme drowsiness, confusion, impaired coordination, decreased reflexes, respiratory depression, coma and possible death.

The victim told investigators that he did not drink often. He said the last time he consumed “exponentially higher” amounts of alcohol was on the Fourth of July, when he drank three Long Island Teas and three beers.

Even after drinking that amount, the man said he had not become drowsy and disoriented as he did after drinking with Adams. He also told investigators that this was not the first time he had become drowsy after meeting her.

Earlier in August, the victim fell asleep behind the wheel after leaving Adams’ home. An Osceola County Sheriff's deputy awakened him after he accidentally reversed his truck into the deputy’s agency vehicle.

Investigators found that the victim’s normal medications did not include benzodiazepines. He was also assessed for mental acuity and was not found to be forgetful or in a state in which he would intentionally take drugs to hurt himself, while investigators found no previous history of opioid use.

Authorities arrested Adams outside a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Polk County on Aug. 27, 10 days after the incident. Along with attempted murder, she was charged with resisting an officer without violence, offering prostitution, tampering with physical evidence and five drug related offenses.

During a search of Adams’ vehicle, authorities found prescription medication, including 19 pills of hydrocodone/acetaminophen, 2 1⁄2 pills of oxycodone hydrochloride and nine Zoloft pills. They also reported finding a partial Adderall pill and a partial Xanax pill.

Court records show Adams was previously involved in a Lake County investigation concerning a woman named “Nala.” That woman was allegedly approaching an elderly man “with the intent to obtain goods and money from the gentleman.”

Polk County jail records showed Adams remained in custody without bond as of Sept. 2. Her attorney did not respond to a request for comment before publication, while Judd said additional investigations were underway.
