A Maryland couple has been arrested following the death of their 2 month old daughter, who suffered severe head injuries. The father allegedly told police that a supernatural force, or Satan, caused the baby’s injuries by slamming a door on her.

Oscar Pineda and Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, both 21, face charges connected with the death of Aida Mikea Monzon Alvarado. Baltimore Police said the charges include child abuse and assault in the first and second degrees, along with reckless endangerment.

The current charges carry a maximum possible sentence of 55 years in prison, according to police. Authorities said Pineda and Monzon-Alvarado could also face additional homicide charges, depending on the findings of the baby’s autopsy report.

The child was brought to Harbor Hospital on Wednesday after she became unresponsive. Doctors described severe bruising around her eyes and jawline as “suspicious,” according to charging documents cited by CBS Baltimore.

A later medical examination uncovered injuries that charging documents described as “significant head and brain trauma” and “multiple skull fractures.” The skull fractures had not been identified during the initial examination, according to the documents.

Doctors also said the baby “suffered from significant head and brain trauma” and “sustained frontal lobe hemorrhaging and a subdural hemorrhage,” the charging documents state. Hospital staff attempted to revive her but were unsuccessful, and she died at the hospital.

Police said Monzon-Alvarado brought the baby to the hospital after the child stopped responding. The mother initially told investigators that the baby became unresponsive while lying face down in the parents’ bed after being fed.

Prosecutors said the mother told investigators that the child was “freezing and in shock” when she took her for medical treatment. The account emerged as authorities examined how the baby sustained the extensive bruising, fractures and brain injuries described in the charging documents.

Pineda allegedly offered investigators a supernatural explanation for what happened. According to authorities, he claimed that his daughter was injured “due to a supernatural force or Satan slamming a door on the child.”

A different explanation involving the couple’s older child was also presented. At a court hearing Friday, a prosecutor said the mother reported that her 2 year old son frequently jumps on the bed and caused the baby to fall onto the floor, according to CBS Baltimore.

The prosecutor challenged whether that account could explain the medical findings. The prosecutor argued that the extent of the baby’s injuries could not have resulted from a single fall from the bed.

Both parents later acknowledged that they had noticed bruising on the girl on Sept. 6, investigators were told. They also said the baby began vomiting the following day, but they did not seek medical care at that point.

According to the parents’ statements to investigators, medical treatment was not sought until the baby became unresponsive on Wednesday. That timeline placed several days between the discovery of the bruising and the child’s arrival at Harbor Hospital.

The allegations outlined by police and prosecutors focus on the baby’s extensive injuries, the delay in obtaining medical treatment and the explanations given by her parents. The autopsy report remained important because police said its outcome could lead to additional homicide charges.

Pineda and Monzon-Alvarado are Guatemalan nationals, according to the source account. Prosecutors argued in court that the couple posed “an extreme flight risk” as they faced charges carrying a combined maximum possible prison sentence of 55 years.
